I am a marine fishery biologist and data scientist working as Data Scientist and Research affiliate at the Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology. My research focuses on environmental and human impacts (i.e. fisheries) on the migratory behavior and population dynamics of (pelagic) fish and marine mammals. I am particularly interested in biologging studies (i.e. with data storage, pop-up archival or acoustic tags). In this context, I developed three R packages on mapping and analyzing spatial oceanographic data (oceanmap), analyzing and visualizing conventional (IRATER) and archival tagging data (RchivalTag). During the course of my studies, I always seeked the opportunity to explore different places. I have been fortunate to study, work and present my research at various institutions and in different countries. Currently, I am working as data scientist, a fast-developing multidisciplinary field in the big data sector which is receiving more and more attention in marine research. The goal of this blog is to introduce data science methods and the analysis of oceanographic and marine biologging data. The blog is intended at beginners and advanced R-users alike.
